Our commitment to PADS is the third Tuesday night and Wednesday morning of every other month October through April. We provide food and volunteers to feed and house the homeless on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning at First United Methodist on Maple in Downers Grove.
Our next volunteer opportunity is in October 2012. We are always in need of volunteers and donations of food. Please check our website or the church narthex for details as the date gets closer. If you have any questions or would like more information about WUMC's role in PADS, please contact Debbie Wordinger at (630)985-4977 or via
email.
Thank You from Downers Grove 1st UMC
Hi Everyone,
Our 2011-2012 PADS season has come to an end. Thank you for all your dedication to this program serving our communities most needy!
This year we provided almost 6,000 meals and 2,000 beds over the course of the year. We also provided a safe place for over 200 children.
Please let all the members of your teams know how much they have made a difference this year by their continued dedication. I so appreciate everyone’s willingness to ‘go with the flow’ in making changes/adjustments as we try and meet ever changing needs.
Have a wonderful summer and I will be in touch in August with information about a start up meeting.
In Deepest Gratitude,
Diane Kerr
About Public Action to Deliver Shelter
Each night that we host PADS at First United Methodist in Downers Grove we have many wonderful volunteers, others who donate food, and many people who do both. However we have a few volunteer jobs that we always have trouble filling. Please look into your hearts and see if you can help with one of these crucial jobs. If you can not make a commitment for every one of our PADS dates but would be willing to be on a call list, please call the church office.
Our major need is for another person male or female to work as an overnight monitor from 2:00 a.m. to 5:30 a.m. on Wednesday morning. Other than staying awake, your job consists of occasionally taking care of requests from PADS guests for water, etc. and keeping order within the site. This last is not usually required, but needs to be considered as you consider if this is a job for you. You can speak to others who have done this job: Jorie Manderfield, Vann Harris, Walt Read, or Pastor Dave.
We also need someone to help with breakfast preparation, service and clean-up. This requires getting to the site at 5:00 a.m., preparing coffee, toast, scrambled eggs, sausage and pre-prepared hash browns, serving the guests and putting the kitchen back to rights. We are usually done by 8:00. Others who have done this job are Janice Nitchals, Pat Del Rosso, Alice Marianyi, and Lynn Balamut.

Other jobs we could you some additional names to call on as necessary are volunteers for the morning clean-up crew. This means getting to the site by 6:00 a.m., picking up and wiping down all the bed pads, collecting the dirty laundry into baskets, and cleaning and breaking down the chairs and tables.
