Learning a New Language

This Sunday we continue our journey through the Acts of the Apostles and arrive at Pentecost Sunday! This day is the celebration of the birth of the church.

Pentecost as well as our United Methodist Church remind us that the work of the Holy Spirit cannot be confined to a certain place, time or people. It invades our lives and our comfort zones to push us toward inclusion and care for others. This has been the underlying message of the entire book of Acts and it is the message that underlies who we are as the church. But it also means that we must find ways to communicate with each other that are sometimes different than what we have been accustomed to. We might need to spend time LEARNING A NEW LANGUAGE.

Our current society and especially in our media presentations would tell us that we should be monolithic, thinking, doing and speaking one language. But our passage from chapter 2 reminds us that the early believers struggled with this same issue. But, the work of the Holy Spirit says otherwise!!! So, what do we do? Where, when, how do we learn this new way of communicating with a new language? Let’s see if we can find some ways to do that on Sunday.

Series Information

In this sermon series, the story of the early church unfolds before us. Many of the challenges they faced are the same (or very similar) to the ones we face in 2018. Questions around leadership, why we should believe in the first place, who to believe and the age-old question of who is “in” and who should be kept “out”.
