The Present Precedent Powered by the Perfect Perpetrator

What is the most difficult task you’ve ever received or undertaken?

Was it for family, or for work, or simply for your own edification?

Did this task test your resolve, or your patience, or your finances?

Who helped you in this task? Who hindered you? Who rooted for you to succeed? Who was threatened by your effort?

Is the task complete, or ongoing, or stalled?

Spending some time reflecting on challenges we’ve faced (no matter the resolution!) can be a helpful way to ground ourselves in the present and prepare ourselves for the next big challenge.

Interestingly enough, those questions also seem to be ones with which Paul wrestles in his letters corresponding with the church at Corinth in (about) the mid-50s CE. Isn’t it remarkable that questions and concerns that we have can be so similar to those of our spiritual ancestors?

Power and responsibility, freedom and liberty, documents and their interpretation, time-honored ideas and new-fangled disputes — all represent contemporary conflicts that simultaneously take us way back in time.

What in the world might all this mean? With Jesus and Paul as our guides, that’s what Pastor Dave will attempt to uncover this Sunday, July 3rd, in his sermon, “The Present Precedent Powered by the Perfect Perpetrator.”

Worship with us Sunday at 10:00 a.m. in person or online via our Woodridge UMC YouTube Channel. All are welcome!
