God's Pathos

Jeremiah 4:19-27 & Luke 15:1-10

Persuasive speaking requires three elements: Logos (logic of the mind), Pathos (passion and compassion of the heart), and Ethos (ethics and integrity of the spirit). Effective communication with children, friends, and anyone involves all three—mind, heart, and spirit.

This week’s message focuses on God’s pathos—God’s heart of passion and compassion. Drawing from Jeremiah, the “weeping prophet,” we see that prophets are those who feel God’s heart so deeply that they cannot help but proclaim it. Jesus himself embodied this prophetic calling. His heart aches for the lost, the sinful, and the oppressed. He calls people to repent and return, bringing our hearts into oneness with God’s heart. Furthermore, we are called by God to be prophetic—sharing God’s heart with the world.
