Jesus Said What?!

Aug 15, 2021 | Rev Dave Buerstetta

Jesus Said What?!

Sometimes reading the bible can be like cuddling up with a warm blanket on a cold night. Other times reading the bible can be like finding safe refuge during a storm. Occasionally reading the bible can even be like hearing a fiery speech that sends us charging into the world to “resist evil and injustice in whatever forms they present themselves.”

But once in a while — maybe even more often than we like to admit — reading the bible results in more visceral reactions:

Huh?

Eww!

What does that even mean?!

With readings from a friendly-sounding pair like James and John (who seem like they could be brothers), we might expect to encounter the former experiences. Instead, we find ourselves much more in the latter territory. So…

What do we do with such uncomfortable readings? Skip them? Ignore them? Engage them?

If we engage them, how? And why?

We might find we even need to wrestle with questions such as: What is the bible? How does it work?

Perhaps then we will be ready for the biggest question of the day: What does any of it mean for us today in August of 2021?

Pastor Dave will contend with those questions this Sunday, August 15th, as he begins a new sermon series, “Jesus Said What?!”

Worship with Woodridge UMC Sundays at 10:00 a.m. in person or online via our Woodridge UMC YouTube channel.

The bible is an ancient document. That means even as it inspires us, some of what we read in it sounds weird, gross, or just plain wrong. We acutely experience that in our sermon series, “Jesus Said What?!”
